Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in US National Security Policy. New Face of War of Terror
Matějka, Stanislav ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Anděl, Petr (referee)
The paper deals with the use of unmanned aircraft of the American national security policy. It examines the history of unmanned aviation, its military use, and cost- efficiency. It then examines the main obstacles and problems with their use in national security that this technology meets and will meet in the future after a higher level of autonomy is developed. These problems involve legal issues, international and domestic American law, the issue of civilian casualties, the role of the media, and public opinion. The final chapter focuses on the problems of technical, strategic and operational issues. In this section the research paper comes to the first conclusion which claims that the introduction of more autonomous systems to war will radically change its structure and, consequently, standard procedures and strategies. Case studies are included to illustrate how successful the drone strategy is applied in the five countries where the United States leads a war on terror. The research using the theory of the revolution in military affairs concludes that these UAVs pose the greatest challenge in history and it goes well beyond military matters. UAVs in national security affect the understanding of the basic principles of war in relation to the concepts of warrior ethos and just war.
Relation between the concept of humanitarian intervention and regime change: the case of Libya
Hanzal, Jaromír ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee)
Diploma thesis Relation between the concepts of humanitarian intervention and regime change: the case of Libya is concerned with the study of military interventions after 1989 in the context of current theoretical discourse. It's main goal is assessing the 2011 NATO operation Unified Protector. The key question of thesis is, whether the intervention, due to the extensive reading of UNSC Resolution 1973, mandate still can be described in the terms of humanitarian intervention concept (in accordance with international law paradigm of R2P), or whether it rather had been a regime change. Based on primary data analysis, the paper shows that actors (most significantly the USA, France and Great Britain) contributing with a theoretically impartial military force, despite the immediate positive humanitarian outcome, helped significantly to overthrow the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. Due to the specifics of the operation, it can rather be described as a hidden regime change - a definition is also offered in the thesis. Based on the theoretical framework created by Michael Reisman, the author also assesses legitimacy of such deeds. The text is divided into three main chapters. Chapter one gives an account of broader context of just war theories, humanitarian intervention and regime change concepts. In the second...
Invasion of Iraq - Just War?
Raiser, Jaroslav ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
The bachelor thesis "Invasion of Iraq - just war?" explores the just war theory, mainly jus ad bellum criteria which are applied on the case of invasion of Iraq, a war which took place in 2003, in the second part of the thesis. It examines a development of the theory through the history and the main thinkers of the theory from ancient times to the present day. Subsequently, the text explores the theoretical framework of jus ad bellum in detail. Its criteria are: just cause, competent authority, right intention, reasonable hope of success, proportionality and war as a last resort. The main aim of the thesis is to analyse justifiability of the invasion of 2003, but in order to understand the context of the invasion the history of Iraq since 1979 with special regard to the Iraqi weapon program and to the reaction of the international community to this program is examined first. Afterwards, the jus ad bellum criteria are applied to the invasion. While these criteria being examined, the public statements of the political leaders of the United States, and information and facts which were available to those leaders or to the intelligence agencies of the coalition states at that time, are taken into consideration.
Responsibility to Protect and Regime Change: Case of Libya
Koucká, Kateřina ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Hynek, Nikola (referee)
The aim of this work is to analyze the relationship between R2P and violent regime change. The work gives an overview of the establishment of R2P on the international scene, and then deals with its problem of selectivity in its application in practice. Despite the formal adoption of R2P in 2005 by all UN member states, R2P has been since then applied to similar cases of humanitarian crises in different ways. The problem of selectivity of R2P is fuelling the criticism of its legitimacy, because it is according to many a mean for achieving regime change. The most important reason for R2P's criticism is the connection between R2P and violent regime change, and that is the central theme of this work. Based on an analysis of the documents which form R2P, the work concludes that military intervention under R2P must not be deliberately used for regime change. However, there may be situations, when regime change is necessary for the protection of civilians; which means that regime change can be regarded as legitimate only if it is as an indirect result of the intervention. Therefore regime change is an integral part of R2P. The work aims to explore this ambivalent relationship and find out, where lies the boundary between legitimate overthrowing of a régime for the protection of civilians, and regime...
Humanitarian intervention in Kosovo in context of theory of just war
Košťáliková, Barbora ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (advisor) ; Trávníčková, Zuzana (referee)
Intervention in Kosovo in 1999 that was led by NATO´s military forces had severe influence on the whole region. Both society and leading authorities were not united in the opinion on the execution of this operation. The goal of this thesis is to analyse the humanitarian intervention in Kosovo according to specific criteria of just war and evaluation of this intervention in the terms of just war. The theoretical part is based on theory of humanitarian intervention and a theory of just war, which is afterwards applied in the next chapter.
Terorism-ethic standards carriing interests of society (politics)
ŠŤASTNÝ, Michal
The diploma thesis deals with the terrorism and war, their meaning in the globalised world and with the possibility of ethical justification of violence. Theoretical part delineates terrorism, its terminology and political and social environment. It describes kinds and methods of terrorism, its history and some of the terrorist organizations with their goals. The thesis also compares terrorism and war in the parts where they intersect. In the next chapters it presents original ethical theories which would be supported by the moral assessment of violent enforcing of interests. There is explained the term of just war, its basic principles and obligatory attributes. Practical part characterize three chosen actual conflicts: the Al- Qaeda attacks on the United States from 11th September, 2001, Chechnya war for its autonomy and current factual occupation of Iraq by allied forces. Legitimate setting in the sense of ius ad bellum, the right to defend by the use of violence, was not mostly deconstructed. In the area of ius in bello, the right in the war, the hypothesis was not verified and the particular violent action did not fulfill some of the basic principles of just war.
